Teachers Support Group MeetingTurner Room Durrant Hall Saturday 7 May 2005 The meeting started with about an hour of Dru style yoga led by Sheila Dabbs and Susan Johnson followed by a discussion on Osteoporosis in the yoga class. Three books were referred to :- Yoga builds Bones: Easy stretches that prevent Osteoporosis by Jan
Maddern price about £10.00 Exercises for Strong Bones Joan Bassey and Susan Dinton which had been borrowed from the local library. Keep moving keep Young by Margaret Graham form the BWY-Shop www.bwy-shop.co.uk Further Internet references to Osteoporosis in relation to yoga were found as follows: Yoga for Osteoporosis Discussion around these articles and books concluded that the most vunerable areas were wrist, hips, spine, and shoulders Yoga naturally works on these areas, is low impact and is ideal in all but the most severe cases for strengthening the bones, the surrounding and supporting muscles thus helping to offset or prevent problems with the disease. Naturally it occurs mainly in older people but can in certain cases be present in younger members of the class. Often it will be present without the tutor being made aware of this and it can be present without the student being aware also so care must be taken at all times. Leaflets were also available from the Osteoporosis Society |
